Taiwanese artist I Hsuan Chou (b.1991) is known for her pastel paintings of imaginary landscapes characterized by dream-like compositions and architectural representation of human figures. Her creative process is marked by quick intuition and an urge for space construction. Described as 'forming a space to exist’, the drawing method reflects her personal quest to find a resting place in an unstable world.

Her human and animal subjects are often depicted in the midst of a journey, simply resting or looking on, marked by a sense of safety and mutual dependency, an atmosphere through which she discusses various themes belonging to the human condition. Founded by her faith in the biblical God, I Hsuan paints from a hopeful perspective towards eternal life and intends her art works to be visual prayers directed to God as her first audience.  Her background in architectural training, particularly an internship with junya ishigami + associates in Tokyo in 2015, influenced the environments in I Hsuan’s paintings, often featuring unusual living spaces co-existing with nature, and her human figures portrayed as drawn-to-scale outlines used in architectural drawings.

Born in 1991 in Taiwan, I Hsuan received private art education with Kuang Ren High School in Taipei. In 2005, she migrated to Singapore and studied Visual Arts in Cambridge A Levels.  In 2016, she completed her Master’s Degree in Architecture at Singapore University of Technology and Design.

I Hsuan resides and works in Bunde, Germany.
